It has been a long time in the works but I am happy and excited to announce that we have found a way to incorporate all 4 year olds who will enter Kindergarten next year into my Handwriting Without Tears program. The afternoons were typically the time that “lessons” took place, but after a meeting of the minds and some shifting of schedules we were able to make it happen for these kids who leave at 12/12:30. Also- if your child only stays one afternoon a week, they will get a second lesson (on Monday mornings) also. February 1 was the first day of excitement and with a quick introduction to the classroom we jumped right into how we hold a crayon. Please follow my shutterfly site as well as this blog to see the pictures I take in my classroom of your child’s work and progress.

I don’t know about you but I have a void in my winter self. It is the lack of snow we have had this winter. In order to fill this void I have a library of books on snow in my classroom this month. We have been enjoying both factual and fiction books so far. Do you have a favorite snow book? My two favorites are both called SNOW, one by PD Eastman, one by Uri Shulevitz. I would like to invite you to share it with us this January. Please bring it in for a day (or donate it to my library for the month) so we can enjoy snow in books until it comes to us in cold flake form.

The first Monday after our winter break the K2 class walked into my classroom and stopped.

”We have a mystery to solve!” exclaimed Bryn.

“We do?” I asked.

Atti replied “see it’s a clue”

“That’s a question mark” said Coho.

We began to talk about punctuation, and played around with sentences that required certain punctuation. Jake piped up right away that punctuation comes at the end of sentences. The reason I had chosen this lesson was to supplement the book making/writing that would come this week in the Studio/Mystery Bay classroom.

Atti knew that an exclaimation point was to “make yourself scream” and Owen added that it was to show when you were really excited. Izzy playfully shouted “There’s a fire!” as a fine example for using an exclamation point.

When we moved on to question mark, Hannah recalled a time when her grandmother and her were making a grocery shopping list and to show that they were unsure if they needed ketchup her grandmother wrote ‘ketchup ?’ on the list. Ellis added that it is also for thinking/wondering. Lucas asked “Jen, why do you have a radio in your room?” When I went to answer he said, “I know. That was my question mark example”. Adah said she asked her mom this morning ”where did Dad go?” when she was wondering that very thing. She then realized that when her mom answered “he went to work” that her mom ended her sentence with a period.

As the month continues the 1st graders will be working on sentences in my room and the K group will be starting on lowercase letters.

Today we began lowercase e, which is a bit difficult. After an oral lesson on how we form e, the kids were given a double lined chalk board to practice. The first task was to find the middle of the space, in which to start the e. Jake found the middle and proceeded to put dots all the way down his chalkboard. These dots ensured that the e started in the right spot every time. As his friends saw what he was doing, they asked why he had put dots. “So I’d know where the middle was” he answered. When we opened up our workbooks it was very exciting to see that the e page was laid out the same way, with dots in the middle all the way down the line. As I continue, I will advise this to kids from now on, it’s written in my lesson planning book- thank you Jake!Click to view slideshow.

This week the first graders got new workbooks! This book is actually just double lined paper with space for drawing pictures too. We practiced writing our names in our best handwriting on the first day. As with a lot of learning here at the Community School, the writing was exciting and contagious. The next day kids were begging to do more writing in the new books. Thursday we decided to have a writer’s workshop. Nora brought one of her favorite books from home and began transcribe the words on the pages, one by one, slowly and beautifully. Izzy also wanted to join and grabbed a great book about cats. As the girls wrote they asked for music. The morning passed with beautiful writing and conversation. We can’t wait until next week!

Alliteration is the repeated use of the same sound at the beginning of words. To become familiar with these patterns both visually and orally will help in the Level 1 reader books. Today in small groups we listened and interacted with a HWT song called Starting Sound Shuffle. The song sings of ten tigers tiptoeing, and then asks the students to repeat. It goes on with more simple alliterative sentences beginning with R, D, H, and M. When we finished, we did the names of the children at the table using these same letters. Though the concept seems abstract at first it came quick. Now you can call me Sen, Ren, Ten, Den, Hen or Men. Molden, Dora, Tada, and Halvadore had a lot of fun! We plan to read Clara Caterpillar by Pamela Duncan Edwards. Clara is a cute cabbage caterpillar who dreams of becoming a colorful butterfly (sadly she is a cream colored one). Did you catch the alliteration there??

One of the things I have always loved about the field of Education is the cooperative spirit between teachers. When I was a grad student, two of my best friends were in law school and medical school. They often told me tales of their competitive classmates purposefully giving wrong answers to questions or wrong times of exams just so that they could succeed and be at the top of the class. Education is the opposite, most great ideas and lessons are not successfully delivered without the help or input of fellow educators. This is true of my latest post.

Every Tuesday afternoon the K2 group (Michelle, Terry, Jaala, Sarah and myself) meet to talk about curriculum among other things. Michelle and Terry shared the recent fascination with snails and Jaala and I brainstormed about how we could incorporate snails into our spaces. Jaala thought the kids would enjoy building snails out of the HWT wooden pieces and Sarah mused: “wouldn’t it be fun to write letters in slime?” like a snail trail.

Wednesday morning I gathered all of the materials and put these ideas in motion. We started with hand sanitizer or soap in our dishes, tracing the letter S as a snail would, slowly, leaving a trail behind. After that we made snails out of the wooden pieces and adorned them with buttons and jewels.

Thank you to my peers for keeping cooperative learning alive. Vive L’education!

Last week we (the preschoolers and I) finally did it- we started our letters! Although many children know all of their letters, through sight recognition and/or ability to form them all, there was still much to learn. The key to all of the formation on the letters in the HWT program is starting at the top, and going slowly. Each lesson began with a review of straight lines and how they could be used to make crosses and squares. We then started with letters L and F.

After the week was through I subbed in the Vashon classroom (on Friday morning)- I led morning circle to introduce myself to the parents who may not know me and introduce the lines and curves we use daily. I explained to the families that we had begun letters this week and I heard a proficient reader/writer say, “it was actually kind of hard”. To me, this means I have succeeded, sometimes it is tricky to have to teach something as basic as an L to a child who has been writing for months. For that particular type of student to watch the ‘correct’ formation and then work at it for an afternoon (instead of saying “I already know how to do L”) warms my heart.

The basis of the Preschool HWT program is that letters are all made with 4 shapes: big curve, little curve, big line and little line. Before we even start letter formation we use wooden pieces of all 4 shapes. We tap them, we polish them, view patterns with them, and we make a man from them. This man is a celebrity in HWT and he is called Mat Man. This year we have seen Mat Man twice. In our most recent lesson I challenged the kids to listen to the Mat Man song and build Mat Man on their own with no help from me. The one group I video taped succeeded in their challenge. At the end, after the camera had turned off Sami exclaimed: “WE DID IT MACENZIE!”

Success!
